EWG Sunscreen: After Trying Many Nontoxic Brands, I Found The BEST!

Before detoxing my entire skincare routine, I used drugstore sunscreens without thinking twice.

However, once I made a habit of looking up the Environmental Working Group (EWG) rating of every beauty product, I realized my trusty Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen (SPF 30) scored a 7 (on a scale of 1-10, 1 being the least toxic)!

My other former fave, Banana Boat Sport Performance Sunscreen Lotion (SPF 30), also scored a 7.

EEK and EEK!

Both products contain Retinyl Acetate and Oxybenzone.

Retinyl Acetate is linked to:

  • Developmental/reproductive toxicity
  • Biochemical or cellular level changes
  • Cancer
  • Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive)

Oxybenzone is associated with:

  • Biochemical or cellular level changes
  • Allergies/immunotoxicity
  • Endocrine (hormone) disruption
  • Developmental/reproductive toxicity
  • Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive)

Was my solution to stop using sunscreen? Absolutely not!

I have incredibly fair (translucent?) skin, so going without sunscreen is not an option!!

The solution was to find products that meet all of the following criteria:

  • Score in the 0-2 range on EWG
  • Actually prevent my skin from burning
  • Unscented
  • Lather evenly without leaving a lasting white residue
  • Non-greasy

I refused to stop my search until I found the absolute BEST brands of nontoxic sunscreen…and I succeeded!

NOTE: Since the sunscreens below are all toxin-free, they work well for adults and children alike!

ONE MORE NOTE: Aside from sunscreen, I use diet and supplements to protect my skin. Read how you can do the same here.

EWG Sunscreen: After Trying Many Nontoxic Brands, I Found The BEST!

For daily face protection: MyChelle Sun Shield, Unscented, SPF 28

I’m obsessed (truly!) with this daily face sunscreen because it…

  • Is super affordable on Amazon.
  • Scores a 2 on EWG’s Skin Deep database.
  • Doesn’t clog my pores. (If anything, it makes them look smaller!)
  • Absorbs more quickly than any sunscreen I’ve ever used. (Seriously!)
  • Is not only super absorbent, but it’s also non-greasy.
  • Goes on translucent even though it’s zinc-based.
  • Doesn’t smell like anything. (Scented lotions give me a headache.)
  • Contains aloe and vitamin E.
  • Is extremely effective at preventing sunburn.
  • Is vegan; reef safe; biodegradable; made without GMOs, gluten, parabens, petroleum, phthalates, silicones, sulfates, ureas, artificial fragrances, and artificial colors.

For face and overall protection: MyChelle Sun Shield Clear Spray, SPF 30

I love this nontoxic sunscreen because it…

  • Is sold on Amazon.
  • Scores a 1 on EWG’s Skin Deep database.
  • Absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy residue.
  • Is fragrance-free.
  • Rubs in clear (and easily!) even though it’s zinc-based.
  • Is water resistant up to 80 min.
  • Contains 98% organic ingredients.
  • Is extremely effective at preventing sunburn.
  • Is reef safe and biodegradable.

Runner-up for overall protection: Blue Lizard, Sensitive, SPF 30+

I love this toxin-free sunscreen because it…

  • Is sold on Amazon.
  • Scores a 1 on EWG’s Skin Deep database.
  • Is fragrance-free.
  • Works great for sensitive skin types.
  • Is water resistant up to 40 min. (However, from my personal experience, it seems to last much longer than that!)
  • Is reef safe.
  • Goes on thicker than both of the above Mychelle products, which makes it easier to see if you’ve missed spots. (Don’t worry! The slight white residue absorbs quickly.)
  • Is packaged in a bottle that turns blue when UV light is detected.

Bottom line: I’m so happy to have made the switch from toxic sunscreen to nontoxic brands! Once you do the same, you won’t be sorry!!
